The Planning Division’s goal is to promote the sound growth and development of the City of Aurora. Planning provides assistance to guide public and private development efforts, guiding projects through the formal development process. Planning works to implement and maintain plans and planning policies in the city. Other planning responsibilities include activities related to long- and short-range planning issues, planning studies, and site plan and project review. Planning also provides support to the Planning Commission and City Council. The division oversees the implementation of the City’s Master Plan, which outlines specific goals and objectives for guiding and managing Aurora’s growth in the 21st century.

The Master Plan
By City Charter, the City's Master Plan is updated every five years. With input from the Mayor, the Planning Commission, and City Council, the Master Plan Review Commission drafts the latest version over the course of a year. The plan considers current and future land uses and future development in the city.
